Post 1996 cherokee 4 high not working. HELP!!

I have a 1996 Cherokee with a 231 transfer case. I was headed up a steep hill in 4 high when my 4 wheel drive disengaged and made a sound like the gears sheering/grinding. 4 high hasn't worked since so I've been using 4 low to get around the mountain for work (which works fine). So I finally got around to pulling the transfer case out to have it rebuilt. I took my transfer case down they inspected it and called me back to tell me that my transfer case has nothing wrong with it, and is actually in really good condition. Any ideas where I should search next? What could the problem be?

I have my transfer case dropped right now. I'm going to pick it up. I'll double check the linkage when I reinstall. A friend of mine also told me to take my hubs apart and check those so I'll take a look. Thanks

your hubs are not the issue... jeeps front hubs are just a solid outer shaft. If the hubs were in some way suspect it would be bad u-joints on your axle shafts. 4wheel drive could still "work", but it would be very noisy and clunky. VERY EASY to tell if those are bad/going bad or not. In your case the u-joints are not the issue either.

look up "adjusting jeep cherokee t-case linkage" on here or google and you'll figure it out
