1996 auto tranny problems
I have a 96. The tranny doesnt shift right, its irratic. I pulled the fuse for the TCU and I can manually shift it. It works fine that way. I talked to two tranny shops and they pointed me towards an electrical shop. They both also said these transmissions rarely go bad. Any info on how to fix it myself would be helpful. Thanks.

Hunt down posts by-- Excess650-- he has all the solenoid tests here. seems this erratic shifting is kinda huge for the AW4. He also has some schematics for the AW4

PM me your email address and I'll send the manuals as attachments.
(1) adjust the kickdown cable
(2) test the TPS voltages as the TPS is often the culprit. Its easy to reach and relatively inexpensive.
There is a VSS on the tailshaft of the trans that sends signals to the TCU. Its fairly easy to reach and easy to replace.
The brake pedal switch can inhibit lockup.
Its not a bad idea to check the neutral safety switch for continuity and its also easily done.

S1 and S2 are the same part but in different locations, and are the shift solenoids. S3 is the lockup solenoid.
I had to replace S1 in my '96 trans, and ordered it from the Jeep dealer. It was about the same price as from Napa or Autozone. My local trans guy warned me to not use the cheap solenoids.
Its a relatively easy job in that its accessible through the trans pan.
