Question 1994 Cherokee vin questions

Hello all,

I am working on a 1994 Cherokee that’s been in the family since new. Unfortunately the subframe has rotted out. Luckily a friend of mine blew out his 4.0l in his cherokee and just gave it to me. And even better the body is in pretty good shape. The on going question I have is can I use the vin from the 1994 cherokee since I am turning a 1997 xj into a 1994. Making it exactly what I grew up with minus all the rust.

has anyone ever done something similar to this? How should I register this thing?

I don't know what you mean by "use the VIN" and I'm not a lawyer or cop, and don't work for DMV but I suspect that when you get done the VIN on the body in various places better agree with the VIN on your registration and insurance.

just my guess.

VIN swapping is illegal. Just swap the parts you want to the 97 and register the 97.

Are you putting the '94 engine in the '97 body?

I think the best bet would be to contact the DMV in your state, perhaps even the department that handles antique / classic vehicles. There has to be some way this is dealt with as far as which vin to go by. You are not the first person to restore a vehicle that was very far gone.

Being upfront and honest with them will go a long way. Also, I think making sure that both vehicles are titled in your name will help the process.
