Default 1994 Cherokee Sport - What transfer case do I have?

Hello, I just bought a 94 Jeep Cherokee Sport - Has the 4.0, and automatic trans. I need to know what transfer case this has, and what years/vehicles I can get a replacement from. I see there are different spline counts and other differences for different engines, and transmissions.

Anything specific I need to look for to make sure the replacement is the right one? This TC blew up, and there isnt enough left to identify it. Thanks!

look for a metal tag on the back of the t-case near the fill pllug. It is gonna be an NP231 or NP242

Look at your shifter.

NP242 Selec-Trac:
2WD (Sends all power to rear wheels)
4WD High, full-time (Sends power to all wheels)
4WD High, part-time (Locks both front and rear driveshafts for increased traction)
NEUTRAL (Allows vehicle to be towed)
4WD Low, part-time (Doubles the transfer case gear ration for severe road conditions and low-speed pulling power)

NP231 Comman-Trac will only have 2WD, 4HI, N, 4LO

I found this on another site (talking about a 231), but I don't know if it's accurate:
Just a heads up, if you go the used case route. You will need a case from a 1992 or newer Cherokee. In 1992, Jeep/Chrysler went to a 23 spline input on the automatics. Other than the pre 91/ post 91 split, the year wont matter. Make sure you get a case from a part time 4wd Cherokee, Grand Cherokee, or Wrangler, and not a Full Time 4wd NV242. Easiest way to tell is by looking at the 4wd shifter. If it says 2HI/N/4HI/4LO, you're golden.
