Default 1992 xj external voltage regulator set up possible issue

Not my first xj, this is actually #3. I just picked up a 1992 cherokee for $800. It has the external voltage regulator mod. I noticed that they left the harness still attached to the alternator and just wired the external voltage regulator on top of it. I don't think thats right. I thought you took the harness off and wired the regulator direct to the alternator. It wouldn't surprise me if it was wrong, they did have the regulator wired straight to the battery instead of a ignition 12v source. Seems to function correctly, shows 14v on the gauge. Thanks

it was already installed on the jeep when i bought it. I assume the regulator in the computer is bad.

there is no regulator in the computer. Its internally inside the alternator, I don't own a 92 but my 94 should be the same setup.
