Another thing that pops into mind... Maybe the OP's Aux fan is on it's way out. It's loud and draws lots of power...
Used ones from the scrapyard aren't too expensive. Plus, you could upgrade to one from a later (94-up) XJ with the swept blades. They're supposed to pull more air, and are quieter.

BUT, the fan is coming on with the AC compressor. The compressor clutch is the BIG draw comparatively.

now that's a great idea, my fan is very loud and could be going bad I guess. I will go to my local JY and see if I can find a newer one and try that. and yes I suppose that the Aux. fan is also used to pull air across the coils for the A/C, and maybe I should leave it hooked up. thanks again.
