Default 1990 cherokee and up

what are some things recommended to look at before purchasing one and whats the most common problem in cherokees from 1990 to around 1999 or so.

also do all models of the cherokee have the inline 6 engine if not then what year or models dont have the i6

last thing are the parts for them cheap to fix up and do they come with the dana 44 axle or do i have to buy that seperatly as im thinking about offroading with it.

thanks

This link will give a break down of each models options and powertrain configurations.

But to get straight to the point, rust is your enemy and a thorough inspection should be done when looking at any year Cherokee. The floor pans under the front are normal trouble zones, as well as the floor pans for the rear seat, the rear cargo area due to leaking rear hatch glass, and of course the rocker panels.

Personally I would be looking for 1993-1999 with a 4.0 and 8.25 rear axle, 97-99 8.25 is stronger. 4 cylinders are available in all years. Chevy 2.8 v6 available in 1986, I think. D44 only from earliest years, 80's, but are swapable to all years. Cheap is a relative term, but yes they are cheap to fix and mod. I would look for clean, STOCK, good condition.

minimum year is 91 that I would buy. Then you get the HiOutput instead of Renix

Get a 1991 and up. I would go with an 98. Currently I have a renix 89 and it runs good and strong. Like my renix cause it's very reliable.

Odd, I wonder why production numbers jumped from 120,000 in 95 to 286,000 in 96?

hello guys i found a 94 jeep cherokee with 138000 miles and i might take a look at it today the guy said he will take 550 for it. So im wondering could some one post up like a list of what to check on them. So when i go there i could have a list to look at and make sure i checked everything.

this is what he said it runs and drives good, no leaks, very little rust, so i want to go take a look at it for that price and how can you tell what model it is ? if its sport or country ect...

thanks guys

The economy is the main answer.

At $550, if it runs, drives and doesn't make any grinding tranny or TC noises, it's a bargain. At that price it comes down to how much more $$ you have in your budget to fix any problems it has. At 550 you are about $2000, below market value.

IMHO a good running, non-tore up, 4x4 for 550 is a good deal... People search all over for running 4x4's for under a grand... These XJ's seem to be well built, easy to mod, and I am really impressed with my 91 4.0 HO!!! Get it man!!

As others have already stated, as long as it is not rusty and does run well $550 is a very good price for a 94. Even if it has a few small problems it could still be worth it. If you have the tools and mechanical ability then when can help find an answer for any questions you have. There is a 96 a few miles from me that has been wrecked in the front and the right rear quarter panel, had the rear axle knocked loose, rear hatch glass busted, transfer case is gone, and various other problems and the fool still wants $350 for it.

one thing i forgot to mention is that the cherokee doesnt have the back seats as he said it was a work truck and needed room inside and its an automatic which kinda sucks but for that price cant complain
