1989 cherokee 4.0 tranny issue
I recently bought a 1989 jeep cherokee 4x4 with a fabtec 4 inch lift for my deer lease. Everything was going great until i decided to test it out at the local mud hole . It made it thru everything no problem. Water mud rocks steep incline. I instantally fell in love with this jeeps ability. A week pater i hauled it to the deer lease When i unloaded it i took it down the road and within 30 yards it had already gotten into 4th gear. It wouldnt down shift into the passing gear. If i stop it shifts back down to first but again when i accelerate it shifts thru the gears within 30 yards or so.
I did get it in some deep water ( almost to the windows) so my buddy said to check the tranny fluid. I drained it and it came out almost black. Not the strawberry shake color i was told to expect.
I changed the fluid 4 times in attempt to remove this but the fluid comes out the same black color every time and my shifting problem improved only slightly. What could it be? Everything worked fine until after sitting for a week after a day at the trails .
Any tips or suggestions would be great!

transmission flush, and adjust the kickdown cable. AW4s are tough and I have heard of them working fine on old bad fluid but its still not great for any transmission.
