Default 1988 limited transfercase

My cousin is looking at buying a 1988 cherokee limited. its a 4.0l with an auto trans. the transfer case is cracked and all messed up though. Is that case a np231 case or something else? I want to check some junk yards locally and see what available but need to be sure i'm looking for the right one. Any help would be awesome, Thanks

NP231 shift pattern:

2H
4H
N
4L

NP242 shift pattern:

2WD
4 Part Time
4 Full Time
N
4LO

The shift arm on the side will have a corresponding number of positions it locks in.

then its a 242. its got the 4 part time and full time on the stick. I think he's going to bail out of the sale cuz he's scared to mess with the whole transfer case swap. I think i might jump on it though because the guy only want 900 bucks for it and i can probably grab that case a junk yard somewhere for a couple hundred bucks, other than that its in pretty sweet condition.

That's a good deal for a limited the seats are so comfy... The transfer case is straight forward unbolt one and bolt in another... But how does the owner know the transfer case is bad.. Most of the time it's the linkage that is messed up... And a really cheap fix

i dont have any pics but the owner didnt know anything about the bad case. He bought it from someone who sold it to him without the front dshaft. the seller is pretty nieve but i told him about the problem. I grabbed the yolk while it was in 4x4 and i spun and sounded all clunky, after a little more inspection, i saw a huge hole in the case where the chain had broken inside and blown out the side of the case. The speedo and the odometer dosn't work either.......is that speedo gear inside the case that would make that not work.

If the speedo is not working the vss needs to be replaced I believe the wiring is near the t case but I am not 100% sure on that if the jeep is rust free its still a good deal

1988 is cable driven no vss when you replace the case just swap over hole speedo drive into new case . Speedo is driven by teeth cast into main shaft . The gear that regulates speedo calibration is plastic .
