1988 Engine Swap - Couple of Questons
Hi,
My son hosed the engine in my 88 Cherokee Laredo (4.0, 5 speed, 4wd). It runs but sounds like it has a can of lug nuts rattling around inside the engine. I know, I'm bummed about too.
So I have a '92 engine and want to follow Cruiser's pretty straight forward HO to Renix swap.
But I've come up against a couple things that have me stumped.
First, how to I get the crossmember off the trans? I put a jack under it and took off the cross member bolts and the small nuts that seemed to hold the top of the crossmember to the trans and it simple would not come off. What am I missing or what did I overlook?
Second, the gear shifter will not come out. I plan to pull the motor & trans as one piece but cant get the shifter off. I took out the floor console and took off all the boots and there was a brass looking, round plate with three bolts that I thought held the shifter in place. but even after removing that late the shifter is VERY securely still in place. What next?
Thanks,
Love this forum and have learned a LOT here.

Quick update,
I learned that the Shifter Tower is what holds the shift lever in place and I have to remove that from the top of the trans to get the shifter out.
My other question was about removing the crossmember. After a lot of studying and scratching my head (left a greasy spot) I realized I have to separate the trans mount from the Cross Member to get it off.
Guess I reasoned through both of those on my own... lol
Still the best forum around,
Jeff
