The older Jeeps had a typical GM steering column. In fact you can grab swap a GM column out of a number of other vehicles from that era. The ignition switches are known to go bad, usually overheating and melting connections.

Still have the column you want to sale? I have an '99 5speed standard not tilt column id like to swap out. Interested in buying yours.

It turned my issue was electrical so the column doesn't need to be replaced.

That was one issue, I also had wiring (poor connections) that were causing electrical drainage. Over the years, it was broken into twice an alarm system that went south and had to be removed. I had to have an auto electrician do the work.
