Unhappy 1988 cherokee water pump

my water pump went out and i changed it and also changed thermostat. funny thing is when i cranked the jeep up i saw my gauge go steadly up to 260. did i forget something. no water in oil so i know it didnt bust a seal or something. please let me know what i did wrong

Did you burp it?there maybe air in it still.

No I would not joke around here,your system needs to have the air removed,there is write-ups here on to do it.
You can either remove the temp sensor on the back of the head and lift the rear slightly and remove the air that way,or you can fill the bottle and warm it up and let it sit and cool,then loosen the cap and let the air escape and the water will fill the block,this may take a few times to fill it.once the water level no longer falls and the water temp runs normal it will be ok.
The problem with using the bottle is the threads can get hot and if you tighten the cap to much you can strip them.

In one of the write-ups I've read, drilling two 1/16" holes, one in the top, one in the bottom of the thermostat plate make a big difference in burping and it will help get the last bit of air out. I did it and can say I recommend it, just make sure the holes aren't covered by gasket and no bigger than an 1/16"
