1988 cherokee dana 35 rear end
My dana 35 rear end has a roll pin where the pinion gear shaft lock screw should be. I do not know how to remove and get to the c-clips.
Anyone know this?
thanks!

Long skinny punch, from the ring gear side of it. You might have to remove the carrier bearing retainer to get at it...

I believe you can remove the rear tires and push in on the hubs then look at the inner part of the carrier to see the C clips.

1988....
Don't spend too much time looking for the C-clips... There aren't any on an 1988 axle. From 1984 - 1989(possibly mid 90) they didnt use C-clips.
You dont need to touch anything in the carrier to remove an axle shaft. There are 4 bolts on the brake backing plate that hold the axle shaft retaining plate in.. Remove those. Attach a slide hammer to the shaft and pop it out..

My experience has been "the proper tool for the the job" makes every thing easer.
I guess I'll go and buy a punch set, but I don't know what range to get. Is it 3/32; 7/64; 1/8; 9/64; 5/32; 11/64 or
3/16; 13/64; 7/32; 15/64; 1/4?
Jack..

True, a drill bit is not the correct tool, but will work almost as well, its not like you're trying to use 2 screwdrivers and hammer to remove a snapring. Besides, it sure beats sitting at a computer wondering which punch to go out and buy...I'll bet you have the right size drill bit and could've had the pin out already
I just measured the rollpin hole in a HP D30 carrier, it was 0.209"
