1987 Cherokee Laredo?
I'm fairly new to Jeeps but I'm finally in the market for one. I've been emailing back and forth with a guy who has a 1987 Jeep Cherokee. I think it is a Laredo? I'm entirely sure about that though.
In his CL ad it says it needs a new ignition switch (it has tilt on the steering column) but I can still drive it if/when I go look at it. Other than that he says it has a 2.9 6cyl motor, which was rebuilt about a year ago and has less than 10k on it. The chassis has 108k on it. Supposedly it has next to no rust, and it looks that way in the pictures he sent me.
I'm currently trying to sell the car that I have for $1500-1300. I tried to get him to trade me but he wouldn't. I told him the most I would give him for it is $1500, but I would have to look at it before I made any decisions, and he said that all sounded fine.
So what I want to know is...
1. What is a fair price, given it is what he says it is when I finally see it?
2. How difficult will it be to replace the ignition switch?
3. Overall, does this sound like the guy is full of ****, or should I continue to look into this?
Thanks in advance.

ign switch isnt that bad to replace but there is no "2.9 6cyl" motor.
1300 -1500 sounds like a pretty fair deal to me if it was well maintained and overall looks to be in pretty good condition (which the outside does).

body looks good on it but i have to agree with kyle we need pics of the engine and the underside. If it's full of rust underneath it then i would shy away. but if her belly's solid jump on it. as for the engine I'd check into it some more. He prolly has the 4.0 and is to much of an idiot to realize it.

KTM: Yah I don't know what this guy is thinking. I was trying to look up the specs for all the Cherokees in 1987 but it didn't give me much. I did hear that those 2.8's were crappy motors.
BastardChild: Honestly, I'm kind of thinking he might not have any idea what he is talking about. He is selling it for his father in law and he didn't even know what it was worth.

I had a 87' once with the junk carburated 2.8. I went through 3 motors and one trans and that thing only had 120 on the clock. If you're really wanting a Cherokee I'd look into the later years like 92 and up. Seems they had better drivetrains, its just my personal opinion. You can find em for the price range you're looking at too, and even sometimes already lifted.

What I've read is the leredo didn't come out till 87 but they didn't put a 2.8 in an 87. But in your previous post you said "the guy said it was the same as a 4.0 just smaller pistons". So if he Knew enough about it to say it wasn't a 4.0 then.........Yea you need to get a picture. lol I have a 2.8 86 xj and you definatly dont want one.
