Default 1986 Jeep Cherokee Front end Repairs.

I was told by a local shop that I need the Left Front Drive Axle and both Front inner axle seals replaced on my '86' Jeep Cherokee. Can anyone tell me how difficult of a job this is and maybe some idea what I could be looking at as far as cost? Any help would be appreciated. Thanks

It would help to know a few more details...

Do you have a part-time or full time transfer case.

Some full time cases were equipped with CV shafts rather than u-joint shafts.

Why do they say you need a drivers side axle-shaft? Usually all that goes bad is the U-joint and they can be replaced.

Your inner seals aren't a hard job, but it is kinda involved. So it would require a decent amount of shop time to change. The only good part is that they would have to remove the shafts to replace them anyway.

But shop rate varies a great deal from location to location so giving you any kind of estimate is going to be darn near impossible if we don't know the prevailing rate in your area.

Okay.... that's a CV shaft... It's more expensive than changing a U-joint shaft but changing the seal is the same.....

Yes, you need the seals. Having a shop fix it, I will figure at least 3 hours shop time. You have to pull the carrier to get at that seal....
