$1450
or he could just rebuild the rear end, he doesnt have to swap an entire axle
most cherokees came with 3.55 gears, but there should be a tag bolted to the diff. cover with a code on it, just get that number and google it with like whatever your axle is on such and such a year jeep cherokee xj, im sure youll find something

if its 2wd literally ANY dana 35 from any cherokee will work. gear ratio wont matter.
search craigslist for someone parting out a cherokee in your area. offer them 100 bucks for there rear.
pickup rear.
install it yourself or take it to your mechanic. even if he charges you 500 bucks to install it you are still in better shape.
if you install it yourself buy new U bolts. cut the old ones off with a sawzall.
you could probably swap the rear in your driveway over the course of 2-3 hours with jacks and basic hand tools.
and thats if you dont have a clue

I took my Jeep to the dealer near me to get an oil change. It was only $17, so I just figured why not? Well, they give my XJ an inspection and one of the things was a rear differential oil leak. Easy fix, but these crooks said if I didn't get it fixed, I could burn it up, and they would charge $5000 for a new differential. They wanted to charge me like $250 for the leak itself.
I don't go there anymore, not even for oil changes.
Beware of Donavee Chrysler/Jeep in Orange County, CA. Just look at their Better Business Bureau rating, they have a D.

Hey im near orlando too. Go to the U pull and Pay over in the OBT Central Florida Parkway area and grab one. Great place. I scored alot of parts there for 60 bucks. I just looked at there website and they only charge 59.99 for a differential. Then find someone that will put it in for a few bills...
no go with the guy that will do it for you for 500 bucks. obviously this guy does not feel he is mechanically inclined enough to install an axle what makes you think he can pull one.
just go with the 500 buck job. thats a hell of a lot better than 1450 and you dont even have to get your hands dirty

True Rich. I along with alot of other people on here are very mechanically inclined so we look at it as why no save the money and do it ourselves. But if you arent then i guess it will cost you more to get what you want....
