that's what I meant. prior to 97 tanks were made of steel, and I believe everything that has to do with the pump and other parts changed. For example the fuel filter is outside the tank on pre-97, while you have yours on the inside.
if you're able to fill 16 gallons, you msot likely have the 20gal tank but always fill up with about 4 gallons still in it. I took the bad habit of driving with my light below empty because I know there was always gas left even if it showed completely empty. the most I got in it was 77 or 78 litres (a hair over 20 gals) in mine and haven't modified anything

Poke your head right up to the hole in the tank where the sending unit/pump assembly were and look for this:

Just to be clear....
If I buy a 20 gal sending unit assembly for a 89 xj and install it, I will be able to fill up past 13 gallons to 20 gal?
Where would be a decent Web site to purchase one of these?

I believe this is how the 20 is set up;
Below is the inside of the tank. The black ring you see is the end of the cone that belongs on the end of the fuel return line on the pump assembly. That cone on the metal line holds the bottom of the whole deal in place. That should be fished out, and installed on the metal fuel return line on the assembly. Then you seat the cone into the receptacle in the tank when installing it. The fuel return and pickup are located in a tray inside the tank, so return fuel is available to be picked up at the pump inlet, even when the tank is low or at an angle.

Hey there Mark...I wish I'd have saved that posters handle, (whose photo I posted)
Now I know why I can remove my sender, move the float and see the gauge work fine, then re-install and have the gauge stick on 1/4, below 5/8, then, and read right again under 1/4.
The return needs to be fit in that gromit/cone for the float to not hit something is my guess.
I didn't even know Renix had one, and that you need to fit the cone on the end of the fuel return, to have any prayer of installing it seated in the right place.
That photo, and a bunch more is in my sig

Sweet info! thanks! Can you replace the unit without removing the tank? And looks like a clothes hanger would work to snag that ring?

Mr. But, on a pre 91 it's possible to do it without removing the tank. I don't know where my cone is, or for certain if I have one! Although Crusier is nearly always right, myself, if I designed it to use 13 instead of 20, with the same tank, I'd leave the pump assembly the same and extend the filler tube down to have it stop at 13. Why on earth anyone would ether do that or leave 1/3 of the tank below the pickup is beyond me!
Idk Mark. I've stuck my camera with flash in places I couldn't see into. I even have a Pic of what I think are rattlesnake retinas...not worth finding right now. (two white dots in a black hole)

Ok so I'm gonna finally do this in the next day or so. Anyone know what sizes the fuel hoses are coming from the unit? One is larger and one smaller. Thanks peeps.
