Default 11 mpg normal?

I've got a 99 XJ on 5.5 inches of lift and 33 inch tires. I get about 11 mpg. Is that normal?

I have a friend with a Chevy Tahoe 5 inches of lift and 35s and gets the same mpg. :/

Yep that's normal in town. Only way to fix that is regear. Also keep in mind if you haven't changed your speedo gear that's not 100% accruate. So you could be getting more like 13 or 14 but these things don't get great mpg's stock and then you add lift and big tires and it goes down.

I would say its not normal, might need tune up, o2 sensors and a good cleaning of the intake/throttle body. Also did you fix your speedo? It will be off causing your mileage to be off too.

I'm happy I have a manual for I get 16-18mpg with mixed driving on ~4.75", 33's and 3.55 gears

I'm unsure of how to fix my speedometer, or how to do the other things you mentioned.

I would love to trim the fenders and put 35s on this sucker.

Speedo gears!!! and a write-up

I used a handheld GPS and found that 3.55 and 33's, I was off 13.5%. So you have to multiple your trip odometer by 1.135 to get closer to the real miles travelled. ie 200mi * 1.135 = 227mi

My first tank of gas I got 165 miles out of, that was mainly around town. Then I took a trip up to a local waterfall and I ended up getting 186 miles for that tank. That's still seems so low, my old Ford with a 3" lift and 33s got more than that and it was a 4.6L v8.

Regear and you will get better mileage. 11 sounds a bit low. It's probably due to your speedometer being off like everyone else said. With my 30s I used to get 20 mpg. 33s now I might get 15 with stock 3.55s. I took a trip to LA on my 30s and averaged 25 mpg.

Stock suspension (for now) and 31"s, I'm going 230 miles before the fuel light comes on just under 1/4 tank left...probably more like ~240 miles with the 31"s. I used to get 50mi per 1/4 tank, ran a few bottles of injector cleaner and it made a huge difference, and I have yet to upgrade the injectors, change the filters or clean the throttle body or replace the O2 sensor....my truck has 200k on it and dad doesn't remember the last tune up he gave it when he owned it lol.

I'll look into the injector cleaner.

I'm gonna take off my roof rack, (gets in the way on the trails around here) do you think with the spare and the roof rack off I'll get any better mileage? Or am I doomed to get 14-15.

Would an aftermarket exhaust help at all?

Removing Roof rack will do more than an exhaust.. Can't really give numbers on these things but every little will help. I installed a dynomax cat-back and didn't notice any change in gas mileage although It can't hurt it. Better flow and lighter exhaust..

I get 11 mppg on my 99 and its bone stock. I've tried almost everything to improve it with no luck. Complete tuneup, seafoam, upgraded injectors, throttle body removed and cleaned etc. The next thing I'm going to try is the o2 sensors.
