Question 01 XJ Front U-joint change?

okay so i am goin to change the u joints on each side of the axle tonight. I know i have to pull the cover to take the c clip off on the passenger side. What fluid should i put back in 75-90 or 75-140.

I stopped at auto zone last night and they list two different weights for 01 75-90 and 75-140 one for limited slip and one for no limited slip(cant remember which is which).

So how do i know if i have limited slip or not?

01 XJ w/ D30 low pinion.

Any body do this or no id appreciate it thanks yall.

I may be wrong and someone can correct me if I am but I don't think limited slip is a factor on the front end..Now I could be wrong but I was thinking limited slip only came on the rear axles...

On the fluid the I use 75-90 and have been told and read in my manual only use 75-140 if you do a lot of towing and such..Now if i was doing a lot of heavy offroading I'd probably use the 75-140...If you did have limited slip you would have to also buy an additive for the diff..

You need to post a complete writeup of the process and take pics..

Oh also on the diff there is a tag..if you are looking at the cover on the left hand side there is a tag that has an id number as well as lsits the gears...You can goto lunghd.com when it's back online and use those id numbers and he has a chart that will tell you if you have limited slip or not. The site is offline atm..

http://www.lunghd.com/Tech_Articles/...and_Ratios.htm

there's the chart...just get the tag number off the diff cover and match it to this chart and you should be able to know if it is limited slip...Doh sorry that site doesn't cover your year model..sorry about that..

idk the haynes said you have to remove the clip.

maybe ill try it without removing the clip first.

so you think 75-90 would be my best bet if i do have to pull the cover?

That's what came from the factory and my owners manual states to use 75-140 if used for towing...

There's no c-clip on the front axle. You remove the hub nut and bearing then pull the axle shafts out. There's no need to remove the differential cover either. The front axles don't have limited slips. I use 80-90 gear oil in all my jeep axles. I have the same 01 cherokee low pinion dana 30 front axle. You may be thinking of the rear dana 35, which is c-clip.

And if needed, the hub nut is 36mm. I'm trying to remember what size the three hub bearing bolts are, i do remember they take a 12 point socket. Isn't it 12 mm?

good advice. i did mine recently(albeit a 90, but any xj follows the same process), and the hardest part for me was getting the unit bearing unstuck from the knuckle. it took some persuasion from a cold chisel, then i used a bolt against the knuckle and with the steering it finally popped off. OP, when you put it all back together make sure you have some anti-sieze ready and be generous with it(you will thank yourself if you ever have to pull it apart again).

edit: just checked, mine used a 13mm 12pt socket(but again, its a 90).

All the above sounds correct to me too. Except I used a short 1/2" drive extension to break my unit bearing loose from the knuckle, instead of a bolt.

I have a 99 and there is no c-clip to mess with, all you have to do is pop the wheel bearings off (3 bolts) and the axle assembly just slides right out.
