Default 01 xj engine on last leg

My 01 XJ sport has an engine on its last leg and I accept that. Only issue is that I have no idea where to buy an engine that fits my year (I don't want anthing except what came in it from the factory) and I don't have the know how to rebuild one. I can however do an engine swap but am having trouble finding any remans or anything with a warranty.

Where do you guys go to get your engines? I would like at least a few months warranty incase I get a lemon or something.
Maybe you know the exact name of the engine that fits my jeep, year wise? Thanks in advance.

I believe you need an engine from a 00 or 01. The electronics on those two years are a bit different than previous years. I would try your local junkyard.

Well the junkyard I am seeing as a last option. I would rather spend slightly more on a reman that I can take care of perfectly from the start, but don't want to be spending so much my head spins. I fear with a junkyard engine I could get the same problems I'm having now in a years time

What problems are you having and why weren't they addressed?

Engine knock, stall and rough idle. Compression tested a few cylinders in the 50s (3 and 5) and used oil to determine that it is probably piston rings along with whatever else is knocking at the bottom of the engine. It was purchased with very high miles. Was told that it will be easier and probably cheaper to engine swap.

Don't know about your neck of the woods but down here in Texas you can have a NICE rebuild done for $1700-$2200 depending on what you decide to do about the head.

Don't know a single local place here but theres some nice rebuilds for 2000-2500 ive seen online but thats just a tad more than i'm willing to shell out at this time. Is that too much for a 4.0 Cherokee engine with no upgrades you think?

advance sells these. No idea if they are any good, and it also says not available online, so you need to go to the store and ask

another option is to find a beat up or wrecked XJ with low miles ( I would say under 150?) or recent rebuild, take the motor out and sell the rest.

There are no electronics in the long block. You can swap in a motor from a prior year and just use the existing exterior components in the 2001. The only issue would be that you would have to rig up a bracket to hold the coil rail onto the older head.

ATK has a decent reputation. They build (or built, not sure if they still do) crate engines for Chrysler that are branded as Mopar. If a local Advance store can handle the order and the price isn't crazy, that might be an option.

Keep in mind though that you'll pay local sales tax on it if you order it through the local store. On the other hand, you'll pay $300-500 to get one shipped directly to your door from an internet seller, so the local tax may come out less than shipping.

Thanks for all the input. I'll post back here when I decide on what route to take and how it works out.

Check Evilbay for a rebuilt engine.

Yeah, you do. You said so right here:

The hardest part of rebuilding an engine is putting it back in.

The second hardest part is taking it out.

The actual rebuilding is easy.

If you can find a local machine shop with a good reputation, you can rebuild an engine.
