01 Sport tune-up
I just bought an 01 Sport; new to the venu.
I want to do a tune up, but am only familiar with the old-school tune up (points, plugs, condensor; I've had an MGB for years).
What do I need to do besides plugs and is this something that a novice mechanic can do on a Sport?
PS, I have tools.
Thanks.

Basically just fresh plugs and check/replace your air filter on your vintage. I like NGK for the 00-01 ignition system. Be sure you verify that the plugs are properly gapped at .035 before installing; don't trust the gap out of the box.
BUT, just as important is to review if any of your fluids need to be changed. They are the lifeblood of your vehicle.
Oil, coolant, differentials, transmission, transfer case. When were they all last changed?

Buy the right spark plugs. 4.0's like copper plugs. I learned the hard way when I bought platinums. Change all your fluids. Clean your throttle body and any components on the throttle body. Use fuel treatments for the gas tank and the injectors. That's what I've done and it runs pretty decent
The Sport has 170,000 miles but ran great on the 3 hour drive home @ 70mph. Even though it was only 200 miles and not real accurate, I got over 20mpg at 70 mph; very happy. I figure it probably doesn't need much more than what you've suggested for a tune up.
I have already found the "heat soak" problem that is mentioned on list quite often. I also see by the carfax that the heat shield recall issued many years back, was not performed. From reading this list, I'm gathering that this might cure the heat soak problem.
BTW, is there a thread/website that shows where the oxygen sensors are located and how to change them?

] XJ a couple weeks ago. A 99 Sport 2dr. Was crawling around under it this afternoon, and it had one O2 right before the cat, and another one up higher on the exhaust manifold, around where it becomes a single pipe.To change them, you just unplug the single-wire connector, then use a wrench to remove the old and screw in the new. Note that due to the wire and the plastic connector end, you won't be able to use a box-end wrench to install, it will have to be an open-ended wrench. Be sure to use anti-sieze on the threads when you install.
