01 Rebuilt Engine Install Tips
Hey Folks,
I'm picking up my engine from the shop next week, had it rebuilt after piston #1 blew up. My Jeep (01 Sport ~180,000k) has been sitting for almost 2 years since it blew up, I got a decent tax return this year and what better way to spend it than to send the engine to the shop and buy a bunch of new parts? Below is a list of everything I've purchased. I've done quite a bit of work already like the HVAC overhaul (yes, that was a PITA), replaced torque converter, new battery/ground cables, basically everything I can do with the engine out, is done. At this point I'm just looking for any advice or tips on dropping the engine back in, what/what not to install on the engine before I mount the engine, as well as any last minute things to do while the engine is out that I might have missed. I'm hoping to avoid as many headaches as I can... I bought this Jeep knowing it would be a project rig (it had piston slap when I bought it) and have been enjoying doing research and learning about my XJ as I tinker with it. I've never really worked on any vehicle before buying the Jeep and am definitely no mechanic. But I thought it would be a fun project, and it has been, but I'm excited to get her back on the road and probably dump a bunch more money on her when I dive into the axles and suspension. I deeply appreciate any tips or tricks or advice on installing all this crap!

Have you installed the radiator and condenser yet? If not, I'd wait to have more room to stuff the engine in and not risk damaging them.
Check to make sure your new alternator clears the brackets before you install the engine. I'd even go as far as mount all the accessories with brackets while the engine is out to make sure everything aligns and fits OK. Then leave the brackets on and remove the accessories.
It may be a tight fit dropping it in, but also mount the manifolds on the engine before installing so you have easier access to the manifold bolts.
Don't forget to slip the fan shroud on the fan before you drop in the radiator/condenser.
AND MOST IMPORTANT>>> Post pics of your progress.!!

Thanks for the reply!
I haven't installed the radiator or condenser for that exact reason, and I did grind down the alternator bracket to fit the new alternator. I agree that mounting the manifolds is smart, I'm just not sure if I should put the new engine mounts on before or after I get the engine lined up to the bell housing.

If you are putting the engine in and the gearbox is still in the vehicle, this little tip will make things easier
obtain some longer bolts with the same thread as the bellhousing bolts.
Cut the heads off two long ones, (4" to 6"), cut a slot in the end for a screwdriver, and wind them into engine where the GB bolts on
Use these longer "studs" to assist the GB slide up to the engine at an angle.
Use some of the other longer bolts to wind the GB up a bit, but make sure it slips together by hand. Do not use bolts to pull it fully together, ensure your torque convertor slides correctly in place.
tighten up with a couple of original bolts, remove longer bolts and studs and re-install all original ones
