Default 01 Cherokee grinds when changing gears

So sometimes when I change gears there is a momentary grinding noise as well as the inside lights dimming. It seems to only happen when I change gears to park and neutral with no correlation to temperature. At first the grinding sound was short but recently it has been continuous for as long as it was in park or neutral. Here is a video I took of the sound

that sounds like the starter trying to engage while the engine is running. does it make the noise when in D and driving around normally?

So far it has only made the noise when changing gears at a standstill.

i would get under it, engine off/in park, and check the area around the shifter linkage for wires or anything tangled up. that's an odd sound and very hard to diagnose on a cell phone. poke around the starter wiring from end to end for any damage. the lights dimming and that sound sure seems like your starter is tryin to engage an already moving flywheel.

Yeah, that very much sounds like the starter engaging.

I suggest you drain the trans fluid into a clean container and inspect for metal.
