Hehe, when it gets up to temp (210 or w/e) make sure it is. Or you can turn the A/C on, the aux fan should always be running when the A/C compressor is engaged.

Even with no thermostat 210 is correct operating tempature. Why are you running without a thermostat? You may be able to regulate your temps better by running a thermostat. Maybe a 180* would work for what your looking for.

^ exactly i ran a 180 in mine but i believe the correct is 195.
If you want it to run cooler than 210ish your gonna have to upgrade the cooling system. 180 is the temp the t stat will open at but its not the operating temp of the factory system.

I just got my cooling system in top shape Wed (weak fan clutch). Went with the NAPA 272310 fan clutch. Since then I've seen no more than 195*(new Mopar t-stat value) on the gauge almost all of the time. And that's with the A/C on and air temps in the low to mid 90's. I drove (creeped) up a 3mi incline in 2nd gear during the hottest part of the day then let my XJ ('96) idle a few minutes and did see 210*(A/C on). The test will be today when I go up on the mt. which is about a 5mi pull (9% grade) at 55+ mph. This is where my gauge would go it's highest (just at the red) before repairs.
I want to mention that OEM does offer what they call an "extreme duty" stat that has a 180* value. I went with the 195. For some reason the 195* value isn't listed on their parts list but is on the stat itself. . I've not seen one like it before (wish I'd have taken a pic to post). On the outter rim is a crimped hole that looks to be about 1/8th" in dia. with a check ball in it.

210 is fine. The weak link in the XJ cooling system is the dinky radiator....it has a very small frontal surface area to motor cubic inch displacement.
The FSM says "do not operate WITHOUT a t-stat". The t-stat does one thing and one thing only, and that's control MINIMUM coolant temp. All of the other cooling system components, their condition, ambient temp and driving/operating conditions determine MAX coolant temp.
Nowhere in the FSM does it say 210 is normal operating temp. On '96 up OBD-II, as long as the PCM sees coolant temp reach 160, in X amount of time, a CEL will not be triggered and when coolant temp reaches 218 the PCM turns on the efan. One could say the normal operating temp range is 160-218.
