Default 00 cherokee hard start / p0455

Hi,

I have scoured the internet researching this issue, but I haven't seen anyone post the same issue combo that I have.

My 00 XJ sport 4x4 4.0 auto 148xxx (stock) recently had trouble starting. After cranking the ignition, it would not start til the 2nd or 3rd time. A solution was found in the forums by turning the key to the on position for a couple seconds at a time for 2 turns. The jeep would start like normal. Makes me believe fuel pump module is issue as I was priming the line.

After doing this for about a week, the jeep threw a p0455 evap large leak. Odor of fuel was detected. Code was read by autozone, but not cleared. Code disappeared and reappeared a few times, doesn't seem to be related to fuel up times. Newer gas cap since last year, problem just started.

After research, it sounded like a vacuum leak somewhere, so smoke test was done at local shop prior to hose hunting. No leak detected, or at least that's what I was told.

Would anyone believe that the hard start and large leak code could both be the seal around fuel pump and the pump itself since smoke couldn't be found by the shop? There was odor of fuel coming from somewhere. I've thot about sensors, but I keep going back to fuel smell... Or am I flooding it by priming the line too long when turning the key to the on position.

Also, when the brakes are pressed, my right turn signal does not work. It works fine driving, just not when brakes are pressed. Left signal and hazards are fine. Previous owner wired in electrical for towing to the diver side rear. Checked cables and obvious grounding or rotted rusted bad connections in the rear could not be found.

Thanks for your help!

Default Turn signal - FIXED

Ok, I fixed the electrical issue. When applying the brakes, my right turn signal would not work.

I tried replacing the turn signal/hazard/ignition relay under the steering column. This did not fix it.

I checked the light bulbs and sockets, all we're fine. Checked the ground wires in the junction box in the panel behind the spare tire, those were good too.

I then played with the aftermarket tow wire harness. The harness was grounded properly, and no issues were visible. The tow harness gets plugged into the main harness, and the wiring for the right (passenger) tail/brake/turn lights gets plugged into the tow harness.

When I disconnected the tow harness, the turn signal worked properly when the brakes were pressed. Something happened to the tow harness, which was causing havoc on the subsequent circuit, which was the right tail light harness.

The tow harness was removed, and everything is back to normal.

Here is a link to the harness, and an install video. I basically did the steps in reverse to remove it. I believe the failure is in the built in tail light converter, which is supposed to convert the jeeps 3 wire system into a 2 wire system compatible with the trailer.

So if you are having turn signal issues only when brakes are applied, check to see if your aftermarket tow harness is to blame.
