In my experience, one does not ask to become a mod. It's your reputation on the board among the extant mods that might get you asked - at least, that's how I've ended up moderating on a couple of boards.
One one, I mentioned that another moderator may be useful - I was offered the job directly afterwards (and I took it.)
And, on my own lists, I did put out a call for volunteers because I thought they were becoming necessary (I was right,) but I was still picky about who I accepted and there was a bit of an "interview process" beforehand - and I'd already written up SOPs for what I expected them to do (and what I'd expressly forbidden them to do - which wasn't much,) and what they had to justify doing ex post facto if they had to do it. I haven't had any trouble with them yet.
But the idea that asking to become a moderator - out of the blue - will automatically deselect you has some merit. I've seen that happen.
"The ideal individual to wield any sort of power is the individual who does not want it." Pity we keep voting for people seeking office in this country - I think that has a lot to do with why we're in the mess we're in. I had discussed the idea of selecting political positions by lottery a few years back - I honestly think the idea has merit...

Okie dokie my bad. I'm just use to forums where the moderators actually talk and interact. I wasn't asking to be one in a sense. It was brought up during a meet and great.

there isnt a moderator in the AZ area, so maybe thats why there isnt an active one in that forum. doesnt mean nobody is moderating it though.
and yes, some of you are correct. you are contacted by an existing moderator.

Yep asking to be a mod definitely is not the right path around here.
Yes our mods do moderate and can often get bogged down by the idiots that seem to abound around here at times.
Could our mods be more active and social on the site, sure. However keep in mind we have lives outside of the site.
Personally I feel our mods are social and interect quite a bit with the site. Maybe not in the regional areas in which they do not live but outside of that they are pretty active.
