Well loved Tomken NP 242 skid plate. I don't know if it will work with a NP231. Comes with the mounting hardware, except two self-tapping screws.

The np242 hangs lower than the np231 so it will work you'll have a little excess room

How do you know if you have or don't have "c clips"???

There was another measurement you had to take to figure out which plate they offered would work...Something about the distance between the tranny crossmember and bottom of the T-case housing, IIRC. The early 231 equipped XJs had a different measurement than the 242 ones.

A real quick way to know is if your axle is from mid-89 or earlier, no C-clips
After that you got C clips. But 89 was the conversion year, so if the axle is an 89 you have to open it up.
