This article applies to the Jeep Grand Cherokee WJ (1999-2004).

If you need to replace the headlights on your Jeep Grand Cherokee, you can do so at low cost and in about half an hour. Here’s a simple, step-by-step guide on how to install HID headlights.

Materials Needed

  • Socket wrench kit
  • HID headlight conversion kit
  • Zip ties or 3M Velcro (optional)

This procedure covers installation of the 9006 Xenon Full HID Conversion Kit.

Step 1 – Remove the headlight

First, remove the headlight assembly. You’ll remove the two top bolts that hold the assembly in place.

From there, the headlights will slide out. Take off the 9006 headlight bulb from the assembly by clicking it counter clockwise. Press in the tab holding the bulb into the harness, and it will slide right out.

Step 2 – Install the new bulb

The next step will be installing the Xenon 9006 6000K bulb inside the assembly. The bulbs will go right into place and the tabs will match as it clicks right into place very firmly.

Step 3 – Connect the male and female bulbs

After that, plug the male and female bulbs into the ballast. The power will come from these two plugs being joined and go directly into the ballast.

Step 4 – Hook up the positive and negative plug into the ballast

The last step is hooking up another male plug into the ballast. You’ll see that it has a red and black wire for the positive (red) and negative (black) sides. The ballast has a positive and negative side, which you’ll look for as you plug it in. Once those are plugged in securely, you can go back and connect the other side of that plug, which is the 9006 plug that goes into the original harness where the original bulb was placed.

To mount the ballast onto the vehicle, you’ll find a bracket that helps you mount and secure it in place. You can mount the ballast just about anywhere, so find a clear and open spot. You can bolt it in or use zip ties or 3M velcro.
