Should I fix or part out
Hi all,
I have a 1995 Grand Cherokee Limited with between 117k and 118k (yes, really LOL, I drove it from NY to FL and back a few times and half hour trips to feed my horse in Philly and that's about it). I was trying to get warm during the ice storm and all the transmission fluid leaked out. I didn't know it until I pulled back into the garage so the transmission is working - the best transmission guy told me by phone it's probably a pipe. I don't know if I should fix it and sell it or just sell it for parts. It's been sitting for over a year. Before that it had new brakes, new shocks, new headlights, new battery and is in good shape, I just don't want to fix it if I'm not going to get my money back out of selling it. Any thoughts? I thought about fixing it and keeping it, but I bought a new car (probably a dumb idea) and will take a huge bath on it if I sell it now.

Do you live in a place conducive to parting out vehicles?
Could you sell it "as is" instead?

Depends whether you have a place to part it out, whether you can market the parts and all that.

If the trans survived losing the fluid (it's happened to me twice, one did, one didn't) I'd be looking at what's involved in fixing the leak. If it's, say, a cooler line, it wouldn't be too difficult/expensive to fix - & put $1,000's on what it'd fetch.

Thank you - I think you just made the decision for me. The transmission worked fine when I pulled it back into the garage (I hadn't gone anywhere) and the fluid had just leaked out. I immediately turned it off and haven't turned it on since. This is an awesome car so I think I will fix it and then cry while I sell it lol. Or debate keeping it because I love it. One other question - if it has been sitting for over a year and a half, are the new brakes and and new battery now ruined? Yes, I sat here that long trying to decide what to do...

If the parking bake was left on it'll probably need freeing off.
Brakes could also be stuck, so would be worth pulling the calipers, cleaning the surfaces of the rotors, & maybe the faces of the pads & putting it all back, freshly lubed.
