XJ no more...buying a WJ - front end "noise"??
Morning Gang!!
Per my avatar, my XJ is no more. Guy rear ended me doing 50 or so while I was making a turn and rolled me over. Bummer...
I drove a 2000 Grand Cherokee yesterday and it was nice. Stopped in parking lot to test all 4WD modes and noticed a "clicking" making hard right and left hand turns. Not "wheel hop" which is normal on concrete, but wide said it sounded like a "bike chain changing gears".
Does not do it in 2WD and barely does it intermittently, if at all, going straight.
I thought maybe CV joints, but did some reading and now maybe transfer case chain?
Any thoughts or tips would be great!!

Very lucky you survived, that's good! Very too bad of the XJ, once resuscitated the other driver should be flogged.
Does the WJ have u joint or cv joint front axles?
U joints cheap to service (<$100), cv joints not serviceable, must replace, >$100
TCase chains are good for about 300Kkm or more if lube level is maintained, parts under $200

Old fart with a wrench
CV axle half shafts range from $35 to $50 on rockauto.com
I replaced one on my WJ just because the boot had split and I didn't want to mess with it. It was still spewing grease so it probably was still all right. 163K miles.

My pricing is off for a USA reference, Canadian dollar is way down and we also get ripped by the border on duty, free trade, yeah right.
Canadian Tire Parts Store, Suretrac CV axle, $110 plus add 13% tax (and that's the budget brand)
I've seen a WJ with U Joints, not sure what year it was.
