Steering gear replacement....
Hey all,
I've got some clunking coming from my steering gear on my '96 ZJ. I thought it just needed some lube but I didn't find a grease fitting on the box. So, instead of that I figured I'd just replace the gear altogether. It seems pretty straight forward, for the most part. Has anyone here ever replaced the steering gear? If so...what do I need to know/do in order to replace it? I know there are the 3 bolts attaching the gear to the frame, the power steering lines going into the box, and the steering shaft connecting to the steering gear. Is there anything else I should know before replacing the gear? Any info would be much appreciated...thanks.

Old fart with a wrench
The only thing I can think of is make sure it's centered in it's travel and the steering wheel is straight before connecting it to the column. Turn it all the way to one limit, then turn it the other way to the limit counting the turns, then turn it back 1/2 the turns. After mounting it to the frame and column, see how the steering link lines up when the wheels are dead straight. Adjust the link end until it slips into the pitman arm. After driving it, if the steering wheel is not straight, you'll need to readjust the link end.
It's important that the steering wheel is centered before you disconnect it from the box because of the clockspring.
