No, you wouldn 't need more than that. 2.5* would probably be perfect if you can find them. If you have the patience, I would try a 2* shim set first to see how it goes. Then if there was any vibes left I would increase the shimming up to 2.5 or 3* and try that.

The pinion and t-case output need to be parallel. You can not make the DS and the pinion even(unless you have a sye). If you do it will be even worse.
Read this: it will tell ya what ya want.

I must be really dumb because this stuff is so far over my head that it makes women look easy to figure out.

No fight just agreeing with him!
Just get a cheap magnetic angle finder and you will be set. If you look at the tom woods site i linked ya to(http://www.4xshaft.com/tech_slopesVSangles.html), it will show you how and what to measure your angles off of.. if you are off, just shim your pinion or use washers to drop your t-case a little bit. You shouldn't have to go to much...

My springs had a 2 or 3* shim on them and it was to much. Took them out and put a couple washers under my cross member and is good till I can afford an SYE.

So you are saying that an sye is the 'right' way to go? It seems like such a small lift for all that. Like I said I am having a hard time understanding pinion angles. I guess I am worried that I will end up blowing money if I don't understanding it.

I plan on going bigger someday. I would not get a sye if I was going to stay at 3-3.5".

I called Tom Woods, this is roughly how he explained it to me....
Just get the angle finder, put it on the trans pan bolts, write down angle. Next take pinion angle, write it down. If one is 8* and the other is 11*(just an example) you need to either drop the t-case or shim the axle to get them closer. A lot of guys like the pinion to be .5 to 1* lower then the t-case output. That way when ya hit the go pedal they equal out. i set mine = and it is fine.

Hell with it I'm going to bed...I can think more tomorrow.
Now I lay me down to sleep, I pray the lord my soul to keep, if I die before I wake, I pray my life insurance is up to date.

Here's the site's I used when I did mine. Honestly, I read them several times before I found the courage to attempt it. I did a Hack and Tap and that's a little scarier considering I had to cut the shaft. But, with the instruction from the sites below it was not bad at all once I got in there.

http://www.yuccaman.com/jeep/sye.html

http://www.go.jeep-xj.info/HowtoSYEconversion.htm

Here is my setup and what it cost me:
Rubicon Express Hack and Tap $95
Spicer 211229X $67 Example: http://www.shaftmasters.com/2211229.html
Front DS pulled from another Jeep $50
Fresh U-Joints $12 ea x 3 = $36
4 Degree Shims $30

That's why I was so burned to see the deal on the Iron Man Fab site. I did mine on the cheap and it was still more! $250 plus shipping on everything compared to $200.

And just get the SYE done now, you'll inevitably go higher.

I'm able to do 75MPH (80 since my speedo is not correct) with very low vibes. Probably due more to my BFG M/T's than the drive train. It sucks because some guys can go 5" and have no issues and guys like us bump only 3" higher and lose fillings.

i'm in the same boat. shimmed 4 degrees for now (~4" in the rear) and is much better. iro makes good products, but for $200 i'm looking at the PORC sye and a front ds from the jy.
