Speedometer cable replacement.
How big of a job is it? I am working on a 1990 XJ (non-cruise control)for a friend. I pulled the gauge cluster out to reach down to the ignition switch and trying to put it back in place, possible bent/kinked the stock cable. I noticed the little white tab that clicks onto the instrument housing, snapped, or was already broken. I decided I'd put a new cable in since trying to rig this one could cause it to fail on him.
I goes to the transfer cases, right? How's the routing job? Any tips from those that did it?
I did a bunch of other work on this and just want to get this done and back to him in good working order so I can get back to working on my XJ.
Thank you!

Just did mine on my 90 comanche. Basically the exact same job. It took me about 10 minutes from start to finish. Super easy. Unscrew it from the transfer case and make sure it's free the entire way. I found it was held down by the control arm. And just remember how it was routed and reinstall the new one.
A tip for install is to put it on the gauge cluster first and install that then attach it to the transfer case.

I believe the only in store is oriellys but it's expensive. Either go rockauto.com or find part number and get on amazon. I got mine from amazon for 20 shipped instead of 40 in store

I replaced mines on my 87 XJ 4.0 4WD, and bought it from rockauto. I think it was the pioneer brand.. I think the hardest part would be unhooking the end from the speedo. Since your's is already broken, that should be easy. Snaking my arm up behind the dash while partially on my back hanging out the door halfway wasn't pleasant.
I don't mean to hijack or anything, but seeing this thread got me wondering. I've replaced my cable to try and cure a bouncy speedo needle. It only help a little bit. It still bounces alot from 0 to about 30 or 40mph. How is your needles, guys? Bouncy or not? What else could it be?

My buddies bounced quite a lot before it broke, but I don't know if it was on it's way out.
I'll let you know when I get the new one in Thursday, if it bounces after that. I heard it could be the VSS.

I'm supposed to get the new cable today. I will see where the original one is routed, and see if there are any kinks I can avoid without going too far off path.
UPDATE***
Cable is in, and the bouncy needle is still there. Probably a bad VSS. The cable routed just fine.
