Default possible torque converter problem?

hello people, this is my 1st post, so please be gentle with me!

i own a p reg, 97' 4.0 cherokee, in dark blue, with alloys and a gas conversion! shes a belter to drive, but as of recently has been giving me sum trouble!

here goes!

after drivin her around for 3 or 4 months with no problems, bar the usual few drips of oil of the oil filter arm and abit of powersteering juice, i came to tow my trailer, (big old brian james, so nealy 5 ton combo when loaded) it started to leak what appears to be oil out of the bottom of the bell housing this has ran back allover the rear of the box and down on2 the cat, this obviously caused some serious smoke issues.
once i took the trailer of, it behaves perfectly again. The quantity of oil (maybe transmision fluid??) leaking out is significant compared to the couple of drips i normaly get, were talking coating the entire underside of my jeep on a 8mile motorway sprint.
the jeep shows no ill signs of driving whist this is happening. im thinking a torque converter seal?

opinions and views

btw shes done just shy of 100,000miles, so shes no spring chicken.

100k is nothing for a jeep with the I6...can you tell by color/smell if the fluid is engine oil or tranny fluid? if it turns out to be engine oil its the rear main seal. And once you put a load on the engine it leaks........

What does a check of the oil and trans fluid levels show?

im 99% sure its oil leaking, however the levels seem to stay normal, maybe this is because i dont drive it with the trailer, so it isnt leaking a significant ammount!

rear main seal? where abowts is this and how hard is it to get to?

It's at the rear of the crank...behing the flexplate...that is why your seeing the oil drips from the bellhousing. you need to remove the oil pan to replace it.......not bad.

if its trans fluid it could be a leak at a cooler line
or if the trans was getting hot it will force fluid out the front seal of the trans
but not after it cools down

the smoke is whiteish aye, altho im pretty sure it is oil thats coming out of the bell housing not trans fluid, i checked again 2day and the drips that are there are definatly oil.
it only seems to happen when its under strain, so either main seal or a cooler line could be at fault perhaps?

how would i check for a cooler line?

blowing engine oil out the main seals under load would be bad rings allowing blow by
