Default NEW XJ!!! But Tranny seems funny. Weird shifting

My 95 xj has been awesome so far besides some small things. New to tranny stuff but here i go

Shifts late from 1st-2nd at 2700 rpm every time no matter how little gas i give. if i don't get up to 2700 it wont shift. Very few times it shifts around 2500.
from 3rd to 4th about 2500 rpm. then all the way up to overdrive where i cruise at around 1900 to 2000 in OD. if I slow down it stays in over drive. Even if the Rpm gets below 1500 it will stay in OD. IF i put the pedal to the floor IT STILL STAYS IN OVER DRIVE. I don't know why. i have to really slow down before it down shifts. the shifting is very consistent. I get Really crap gas mileage too. like 9 mpg IT sucks. Lastly it overheats randomly for no reason. Not really hot but the needle is constantly going up then down and sometimes goes over 210 but only very little. It seems to go up when i take a turn fast. I don't know if it is actually getting hot or the dial is broke.Oh and my oil pressure is very inconsistent. I am about 20 at idle and 50-60 at highway speeds. Thanks everyone in advance. The atf fluid is pink and clean.

I'm no expert but these transmissions rarely have mechanical issues. Usually something electronic. Google Cherokee tv cable adjustment. Once you do that it could also be an issue with the Throttle Position Sensor.

As far as oil pressure goes, yours sounds normal. Rpm dictates pressure. So at cruising speed it should be higher than idle. And if it's idling at 20 that's plenty.

Your temps seem ok also. Not sure how much it's fluctuating. A little over 210 is fine. It'll often drop but not too much. I have a 98 that hardly ever reaches 210 and I have an 01 that's always at 210 sometimes slightly above. Check that your coolant is full and make sure your fans are working and you should be good.

Coupla things to check.

Is the brake light switch contacting the brake pedal properly?

Adjust the tV cable

You could have a bad TPS. Check this other stuff first.

thanks for pointing that out. still on my first cup of coffee......

That said, has the OP checked ANY fluid levels or condition since acquiring this Jeep?
Had a knowledgeable person go over it on a hoist?

Sorry guys just got home. MY Cherokee forum app would take a dump every time i would try to respond and crash. I tried what cruiser mention and it did not fix the weird shifting not a change at all. All the fluid levels are fine. have not checked transfer fluid nor differentials yet but its on the list. Between work and school it is hard to find time. @cruiser what would the break light switch have to do with my problem, and what is said switch? i Took out the oil filter adapter because my oil was just pumping out of the old seals on the adapter. I had a jeep tj before my Cherokee and o2 sensors were always a problem. Could my o2 sensor be f'ing up my fuel mixture. Ill look up some ways to check my tps with a multi meter i know i saw a video somewhere. also thanks for the info Waynerd on my oil pressure and coolant temp. Ok thanks everyone i will check the tps and maybe the coolant temp sensor because i read that it can f your mpg up if it is bad and sending the engine a wrong reading

Alright guys i have done some more driving and feeling out this shifting issue. I still havent looked at my tps but i feel like my tps wouldn't be doing this. 1st shifts at 2500-2nd. Then at 2800 into third then od at 2300. I can hardly ever keep it in 3rd for more than a second before it shifts to od. Very Very rarely like once a month i will start my jeep up and drive it around and it will shift perfectly then i get on the freeway and after i get off shifting is back to being locked at only shifting at high rpm's It Is the weirdest thing. Its really annoying considering it eats my gas like. It forces me to have a lead foot in order to shift. Ive adjusted my tv cable multiple times. i even tried force loosening it all the way and it was still locked to shift at 2500 but just felt more sloppy. Any help would be greatly appreciated thanks

The Throttle Position Sensor (TPS) sends the throttle position to the Transmission Control Unit (TCU). The TCU controls shift points based on info from the TPS. Check the TPS.

Hasn't been mentioned yet, but gotta ask. Seen a check engine light? If so, retrieve codes.

Yes, the TPS is a very critical sensor in shifting characteristics. It needs to be ruled in or out before looking elsewhere.

I'm having a similar issue in my 89. But only the weird shift from first to second.
This only happens when I haven't driven my Jeep for a few hours or more and only occurs for the first 3-5 minutes of driving then it's fine. I noticed that I can trick the TCU to shift from first to second when I accelerate up to 2,500-2,6500 RPM and let off the throttle, then it will shift. Fluid is at the right level and pink and TV Adjusted. Would like to see what you figure out about your issue.

Alrighty I replaced the Tps and it did not fix the issue. Ive adjusted tv cable. Iver tried lossening and tightening tv cable, does very little but doesnt change shift pattern. Has anyone ever had these symptoms. only seems to shift high 1-2-3 then 4th seems to shift early. like 2300rpm and once im in over drive im at like 1900rpm. like i said it does not shift out of od unless i come to a near stop. A few times on the free way it did not shift into od. i was going 65 at 2700 rpm and i could not get it to shift into od. This is so weird. Iam completley boggled as always help is appreciated
