Default Need new front Drive shaft for 86 Cherokee.

I was told I need a new front drive shaft for my 1986 Jeep cherokee. This is the CV type. They said they could convert it over to the U-Joint type. I really cant afford that though which run about $300.00. I will probably go with a another of the same type but used. Has anyone converted over to the U-Joint type in a older Cherokee like mine? Is it the way to go?

I have heard of this conversion and I have also heard nothing but good things. The CV style you have now is un-reliable at best!! Save your money and do the swap or save your money and buy a newer XJ. Good Luck!!

If you ever plan on lifting it than save up for the swap.

CV front driveshafts are very unreliable as you have been told, thus the u bolt type is your best bet.

It will, most all parts from the 207 and the 231 are interchangeable..

Well Thats a good question. My Cherokee is a 1986 with Selec-Trac and Automatic Trans if that helps at all. Also, it has the 2.8L V6.

You have an NP207 with a GKN style drive shaft. I currently have one of these on my '84 XJ but I have a 231 sitting next to it to swap out. I'm not worried about the 207 and my 35" MTR's but I am worried about that GKN DS and my thought was to just swap shafts so I recently looked at the 2 yokes and it didn't appear they are interchangeable but I could be wrong - spent a whopping 11 seconds on it. When I get home tomorrow night I'll take a look - if I remember!

And when you guys mention that CV shafts are unreliable are you talking about double cardon drive shafts or am I just confused about what you're talking about? This guy might have something to do with that though...

You may want to consider looking for a transfer case on craigslist or your local JY. This way you can get a 231 (better aftermarket support) and your DS for much less money than buying a new DS.
