Evaporator core replacement help, tips, advice..
Hi guys, after receiving a lot of responses regarding my last post which were all great, thanks, I'm thinking of pulling the trigger on removing my dash and replacing my A/C evaporator core since everything points to having a leak. While I'm in there I'm replacing the heater core and blower motor and checking to make sure all the “doors” open and close as they're supposed to repairing or replacing any that need it. While “in there” what else should I consider replacing for peace of mind? What specific tools will I need to get this job done? Will I need to purchase any “specialized” tools? Before starting I’m going to have my mechanic, who will not do this type of job, remove any of the Freon that the system may still contain. Can I alone do this over a few days or do you recommend having a helper? Can I disconnect the A/C lines that lead through the firewall into the evaporator and heater core or should I have my/a mechanic do it? Does the antifreeze need to be drained since the heater core is being removed?
I know I have a lot of questions but I don't want to get into this and have second thoughts realizing I should have dished out the $1000+ to have someone else do it. A lot of guys have done this on this forum I'm sure as well as other forums so I'm confident that I can too with clear directions, tips and pictures if available. I’m mechanically inclined and have a lot of basic tools so any and all information, diagrams, schematics, wiring diagrams or links to any of the aforementioned would be of great help.
I'll keep everyone updated on my decision and progress over the 3 days I'll be tackling this job

No special tools other than the ones needed to disconnect the refrigerant lines.
A second pair of hands will be a huge help.
Lower the steering column, it makes life a lot easier.
Took me a full day to remove and replace, be patient.

I did mine over the course of 3 days (3-4 hours per day). It is not that technical, pretty straight forward. make sure you disconnect the battery 20-30 minutes before you start taking apart the dash.
and +1 on the extra set of hands. I needed help to get the dash back in place.

If it's your first dash take a lot of pictures.

I've pulled a dash out of a 2000 XJ. Not real difficult, but it's time consuming and a lot of plastic has to come off. Remove the steering column, which requires stripping the column of the covers so you can unplug the wiring. There is one nut that holds the the HVAC case in that is behind the cylinder head, a real pain in the butt to get too. You will have to remove the EVAP pump assembly from the right side of the firewall so you can get to a few of the HVAC nuts. Three days should be enough to get the job done. Replace the blower motor resistor while you're at it.
