1991 Cherokee wants a 1994 Cherokee Motor
So I got a 1991 Cherokee with a 5 speed. it started knocking real bad then the head gasket blew. so I found another 4.0 motor out of a cherokee. I am not a genius so I asked the guys at the junk yard if this motor would fit in my jeep. well turned out the motor I got was a 94 auto cherokee motor. I was doing the swap today and found out the its not guna work. simply because the spot on the 94 engine has a larger hole where the crank is. so when I went to put my new clutch in, the round barring deal didnt fit in the engine. so my question to you smart folks is what can I do to make this work?? Thanks any help would be nice.

What you are talking about is the pilot bearing, you have an ax-15,they were the same in 91 and 94,you may want to talk to the autoparts where you got the kit at,there should not be any diff,I know they make different size piolt bearings

Your 94 engine crankshaft would NOT have a pilot bearing installed. You will need to get one. Not all clutch kits have them as part of the kit. Depends on the price of the kit. They are not that expensive as they are only a bronze bushing that you tap into the back of the crankshaft.
I can't believe that with all the interchangeability of stuff on our heeps that the pilot bearing or the crankshaft bore for the bearing would be different sizes.

Well now that i think about it in the clutch kit I bought, it had a small pilot bearing in it. but the thing is was that it was too small to fit where the Crank shaft is. if you guys have any suggestions that would be great I donno what else to do I can seem to find a solution.

if your really having a problem then just dont put the pilot bearing in. i had the same problem in a truck i had. i ended up getting pissed off and just put the clutch oh and stuck it in and it worked for 3 years untill the frame busted. i never had any problems with the clutch though

Remove the pilot bearing out of the old crankshaft. use that one to find a new one or if it's OK use it again.

Do you have a digital camera? A picture or 5 would really help us out on helping you out. We could use a picture of the rear of the old engine. rear of the newer engine, close ups of the pilot bearing on old engine and where it should go on newer. and finally picture of the bearing supplied with the kit and the input shaft of the transmission.
I don't know how some people get so lucky but a friend of mine tried the no pilot bearing trick and took out his transmission from destroying the input shaft bearing.

I agree I would like to post pictures of everything. but I dont have the new motor here with me its at a buddies house. I think I may have found a fix though. I went to schucks and had them show me a 94 cherokee clutch I looked at the lastnight also but this kit that they showed me had what looked like to pilot bearings and one was the smaller one that wouldnt fit then it also had a larger one, it has the same inside diameter as the one I need but the outside has more material on it so it may sit in where it needs to go. If I get a chance to take pics I will. but if this all works and comes to an end I will let u guys know. Thanks for the help everyone.
