Default could i be looking at more than a new head and head gasket?

i have a friend with a 01 cherokee sport. i was going to get it and fix it for her but she decided she is just going to get a new one. so im going to buy it from her for payoff. i believe the headgasket is more than likely blown and possibly a warped head. it overheated on her and by the time she got out of traffic it died and never would start again. she owes 800 it has 132000 miles. so im pretty much wondering if this is worth it and what else might possibly be wrong with the engine other than a head gasket warped head and then finding out why it overheated? has light damage on the passenger side from a fence other than that its cherry. thanks for help in advance

Will it crank now? You need to do a wet and dry compression test and a cylinder leak down test and see what you got

first you need to determine the problem.... if you need a new head you can get an older one of 96-99 xj but youll have fab up a bracket to mount the coils to the other option is get a 03-06 head of a wrangler they improved the casting in late 02 I beleive. Get yourself a manual Chiltons or Haynes itll save save you a lot of money if you can do the work yourself (which anyone can) this will determine if its worth buying or not, the labor to have a shop do the work you will eat you a new one. As was stated a compression test needs to be done you can rent the tester from Autozone or Advance with a refundable deposit.

It has to be the SAME NUMBER 0331 because of the what hangs off the head get a rem. head or new one that says it has fixed the problem with these heads. Lets get your INFO right POSJEEPXJ yes other heads bolt on but why when you can get a new one that is right for the motor and has greater flow than most and every thing bolts up.

well went and looked at it and the damn thing started right up. you could here compression leaking while it was running. i put my hand beside the head and u can feel it coming out on the number 2 cylinder between the head and block the gasket is hanging out partially. didnt do a compression test because it was like 106 degrees out side and i was sweating bullets. i went ahead and bought it it has 125467 miles on it the only damage was white paint on the front fender flare and the back one is missing so no dents or scratches from hitting the fence. it also has brand new goodyear evos on it so i figure its almost worth it just for the tires. and i wont have to rent any tools from oreillys i have a fully stocked shop with just about everything you could imagine. my friend and i have a race engine buisness together but i mostly work on chevys. so this is alittle outa my ballpark but im confident i can get her running for around 300 bucks in parts. i also found out why it overheated the radiator isnt full of water its half full of rust water lol. she said she didnt know you had to flush the radiator annually. so it hasnt been done since she bought it 5 years ago.
