Haynes has a diagram for '96 and later that shows a: "fuel strainer (filter)" on the pump assembly. In another section, they show an image of an in-line filter for 1996 and earlier. That's all there is. I've herd that since "96 was a transition year, some had '95 components while later models were mostly interchangeable with 97-99's. Chrysler is a perceptual can of worms and deleting the in-line filter for thousands of XJ's = $$ in their pocket - with the rationalization that the strainer will suffice to the end of their warranty. I may locate a large one in the engine bay. My 1996 Acura GSR has a large fuel filter bolted to the firewall. The shop manual notes that it's "lifetime" with no interval for replacement. I've never had the throttle body off that automobile. - Well filtered gas is great!

I guess some things about jeeps never change. My last jeep was a 78 wag, amc 401 (the baddest "big block" I've ever run) with a GM th400 trans, BW1339 xfer case, ford 4350 carb, I think it used a Chrysler dizzy, Dana axles etc. Ya never knew what you were gonna get from one to the next either, the next few off the line might have had quadrajets and tf727's.
