Death Wobble
So I'm trying to eliminate my death wobble. I need some input to add to my check list of things to do tomorrow to get rid of it.
I have a Rusty's 4.5" lift with their HD adjustable track bar and steering conversion kit. A brand new steering stabilizer (single). I've got some rather bald tires with uneven wear. Tcase drop installed with new drive shafts and SYE.
I noticed the wobble at it's worst with tires at 40psi. I lowered it to 35psi. It's definitely better with lower psi but still there. I just don't want to run too low of a tire pressure and end up with worse gas mileage then I already have.
So here is what I know to do tomorrow. Replacing tires. Alignment. Check torque on all bolts underneath. Check for warn bushings.
If none of the above works. I was thinking of installing the double steering stabilizer.
This is where i spin off into a multiple question in one thread. Does anyone have any experience with a heavy duty steering shaft? I was reading a little bit on this HD Steering shaft by Borgeson. I haven't found any treads or comments on it.
In the Rusty's lift kits. Seems they are firm believers in using OEM rubber bushings for a number of reasons. However, I don't have experience with urethane bushings in a jeep. I know it would make for a ruffer ride. Which I really don't care too much. Would this maybe help with the DW?
Thanx in advance for your input.

When I bought my Jeep I was told it couldn't go over 45mp because of the death wobble, I have since replaced all of the front bushings. I have found that before I did the entire Jeep would move left to right over the front axle the engine off. I then replaced the track arm bushing that seemed to help a little and found that the bracket at the body was loose. Replacing the control arm bushings did the trick to cure the wobble. I would look for loose items and see if you axle is staying under you Jeep then see why it's not.
There's quite a few factors to consider. But Tires and Alignment are the first to do. If you have older tires. They might be cupling (sp ck). The uneven treat wear causes quite a bit of DW. Also make sure everything is torqued down to their appropriate torque specs. Also consider your steering stabilizer. That's a cheap and easy fix.
If you've got a lift and running factory steering setup. That can also contribute it. I've been using the Rusty's steering conversion. It's great.

my point exactly. Some times it's as simple as a stabilizer to an alignment. Then it gets more expensive with tires. replacement of bushings etc. Personally this **** I listed in my original post will pretty much eliminate your DW. Start with least expensive to the most expensive. Straight up. If you know your tires are bald. Replace em. Might as well have an alignment done. We all know the life span of bushings. Which at best is roughly gonna be 90K. Especially in the font upper and lower control arms.
Which i've been meaning to replace my front upper control arms. So if your that guy that keeps getting that "Pop" sound in your passenger or drives side. It's your control arms. Most likely. Bushings are weathered and they want replaced.
It's not a bad idea to check torque specs every 3 months or so for good measure. You'll be amazed. Believe me.
I hope I can be of some help to some of you cats out there with some of your issues with your rig.

I have recently experienced the Death Wobble on my 96 cherokee sport. I have NO clue on what to do to fix it. Scared the hell outta me my first time since I was driving at 75 mph through downtown Detroit in traffic and didn't know WTF it was.........any suggestions? (also had another DW tonight doing 45 after hitting a large section of bumps)

Check each thing. Alignment, steering stabilizer, Tires, etc.
You also failed to state whether if you have a lift or not. Chances are if your a stock suspension. Your problem is Alignment or Steering stabilizer. If that's not it. Check ur tires. Your tires might be cupping.

one of he main things to cause dw is the stock track bar ball joint top mount. that ball joint wears out quick if you have a lift.i suggest a heim joint in stead. alignment will fix for a time.

Twice I have had the dreaded Death Wobble in my 97 XJ. The first time a few years ago, I replaced the the track bar with a heavy JKS unit. Then New tires all around, followed by new shocks, new steering stabilizer, poly control arm bushings and an alignment. All that finally ended it the first time.
Last month it returned. Replacing all the worn and loose tie rod ends, as well as the 4 worn ball joints followed by an alignment ended it the second time.
Now she handles like a new ride. Any worn and sloppy component in the front end can bring on the Death Wobble it seems. I don't think it can be placed on a single component each time. My experience it seems to be a combination of factors. Take your time and inspect everything, then reinspect it again.
