Got a chance to buy a set of winter wheels for my 2001. Tires are mounted on stock Ford ranger steel rims. Everything I've searched say the bolt patterns are the same.

Question is whether the hub hole size will work. Some say hub size on ranger rims are too small to fit, other say they are larger and will fit fine.

Anyone know which is true? And if the hole is larger on the ford rims, can the wheels still be safely mounted?

I would just drive over and try and slap one of the wheels on, but of course these came up when I've got the front end pulled apart. Thanks.

 

Measure the hub opening on your wheels. Ask whomever has the Ranger wheels to do the same.

 

I would but the guy is out of state currently, and I've got a small time window to hook up with him. And as I said, even if the holes are bigger, I'm trying to find out if there be an issue as to them not being the exact same size.

 

Bigger you are fine not going to hurt anything. If they are smaller I believe its not by much you could clearance it to fit. Its been done before. Always measure and bring the tape measure with you and measure yourself.

 

I have seen ranger rims on a few jeeps and multiple years too so they should work fine.

 

If it's a good price, go for it. Jeep steelies are easy to find, cheap, so if the Ranger rims don't work, it's not hard to swap them for something that fits.

Good point..Monies kind of tight now, so I'd rather they work as is...but worst case of having to swap them, I'd still be ahead of the game.

 

also make sure they are not 14" rims. Some rangers came with 14" steel rims from the factory.

 

As long as theyre all the same size it shouldnt make a difference lol. May even feel peppier off the line. Only thing you will notice is the speedometer reads differently. Dont be like my dad and not read the tire dates. Bought 4 tires from an older blazer only to find theyre from 1996 for 50 bucks. But aluminum rims might as well scrap them lol. I learned this the harder way when i bought 4 americus classic 787 tires and naive me at the time didnt know tire age will really affect driving comfort lol. I bought them for 40 bucks but noticed they were from 2005 so meh better than the dry rotted tires i was on before.

 

I'm not sure the brake rotors will fit inside a 14" wheel...

Some Rangers came with 14" aluminum wheels as well.

Another thing about Ranger wheels that the OP should know... They don't have as much backspacing as the stock XJ wheels. I believe most of them are in the 3.75-4" range.

 

Yes Ranger wheels will fit I used to have a Ranger and I remember that the Ranger and Explorer wheels would fit a Jeep but some 15" Jeep wheels wouldn't fit on the Ranger due to the larger brakes.

 

Thanks for the added info. Luck would have it I got sick as a dog and haven't got out to see them. Hopefully tomorrow. Wheels are 15" with 235/75/15 tires. The guy did confirm the hub hole is about 3". Will check the date on the tires. I'm running a stock suspension so I'm hoping the smaller backspacing with the larger tires won't rub anywhere. Will follow up.

 

Went to check out the tires. Goodyear Wanglers. Guy said they only had about 200 miles them and they looked it. Came off a truck that had the engine blow right after he put them on. 250 for the set. It was hard to do but I passed. I've got some health issues and in the process of down sizing all my crap. Couldn't justify having another set of tires and rims to store and move around at this time. Will just bite the bullet and put new ones on my alloy rims.

Here is my 90 XJ Pioneer. Had to do some filing to fit but they work just fine.

 

Off an Explorer with 245/75R-16's. Just had to get rid of the crappy steel wheels it had when I bought it.
