Thank you gentlemen, understood on the location, so, I know the two hoses were leaking right where they exit the compressor. Seems like after replacing those I should do a vacuum check. Is there a vacuum pump that will do the job in the 50 dollar or less area? More wishful thinking on my part or not?

there isn't much near by, it's one of the trade offs. I can check around w/some of my friends, I may be able to borrow one. Gotta find the hoses first. Thanks 4 helping.

the elephant in the room seems to be there ARE no AC hoses for 87 cherokees. So far anyway. Can hydraulics places make these up? What about putting new ends on? Aren't these mostly some kind of flair fitting?

A hydraulics place should be able to make you hoses,I would call and talk to them before i made the trip and they probably want the old ones to copy off of.

Hi Andrew, I should have posted this a.m. I wasn't able to talk to anyone over the weekend but I called a hydraulics place today and am going tomorrow w/hoses in hand.

You know there was a fair amount of pressure in the system when I disconnected the hose that goes into a small box that goes thru the fire wall. There was a little bit of foamy brown bubbly stuff that came out. Judging by the sound the air made it could have been about 40 lbs or so. I didn't expect to find any pressure in there.

A friend is loaning me his vacuum pump so once I get the hoses I can see where I'm at with all this. I found the two hoses in a wrecking yard not too far away. 75 bux for thirty year old hoses, so I thought I try the hydraulics guy first.

Sorry I forgot to post about that.

Here's something that ocured to me about using my friend's vacuum pump. If there is still some oil, maybe that was the brown bubbly stuff, can the possible remaining contents of the system harm his pump? Or do they have some chamber where that stuff gets trapped?

If it doesn't have a catch-can, you can make one with a jar pretty cheaply

Would I seal this with something like silicone or permatex black? I don't know the forces involved.
