The wj if you want a 6 cylinder look at the 03-04 years only. The 99-mid 02 wj got the same cracking head the 00-01 xj had.Jeep put that head on everything back then was a good idea tell the casting problems showed up.

Not an XJ, but I was looking at WJs as well, and it looks and feels clean. I drove it, having it inspected tomorrow. Price is great for this area. I have a hard time finding anything else at this price that isn't much higher mileage.
That still doesnt seem that great for a WJ. I bought one a few years ago that was in nearly mint condition for $4000. V8 AWD as well with a few more miles. I feel like prices around your area and mine are about the same. I would keep looking. For your reference...

Nice looking ride. Yeah I would love to find something like that. This guy is the lowest I've seen over the last month and a half, and he already has two other people coming to see it from Northern AZ. I'll think on it though!

You could always drive out this way to get a deal! Its only a couple hours. Might be well worth it. Shoot, you could get a really nice XJ for that price. I know its all a personal preference, but after owning a WJ and a few XJs, the XJ will always be my favorite.
