Default 42re Neutral Safety Switch

My reverse lights quit last night, so I went to buy a new NSS. NAPA didn't have it in stock, so I went to the dealer. They didn't have it either and the parts guy looked it up on his computer. There are over 500 back orders in their system! He said they must be going to discontinue making it, so I'd have to get an aftermarket part! He also said that part number, #3747361, has been used since 1951, same switch, same number! That means it's been used by Mopar since before they had a fully automatic transmission! IIRC, the 55 Chrysler had the first Mopar automatic, the Powerflite! 2-speed slush pump. Stick on the dash. I know they had a semi-automatic in 49.

Anyhow, Rockauto still has them.

Dang,.bro, that's like before I was a gleam in someone's eye up in the Adirondaks! That's before JFK started fooling around with MM! I knew there was a reason I never ordered one. I have seen a few articles on how to clean/ rebuild them though. I haven't run into one that blanks out the reverse lights. However I have seen the harnesses corrode out and do it, mostly they are in the back by the lights somewhere.

No, you got it all wrong. The NSS I'm talking about is the plug switch in the 42re, not the weird slide switch on the AW4.

That cannot be, as I am never wrong. I do know I was born in 58.
Now, I have the 42re on my grand, and the AW4 on my xj, both have sucky NSS that often won't start in Park. Since they both have the same symptom, I just Assumed they were both the same design. Not the case eh.

I just bought one yesterday at Autozone for my V8 '93. They still stock all three luckily. 46RH, 42RE, and the weird AW4 one for the 4.0's. Aftermarket, but you gave me a scare there, dude.

No, all I said was Mopar MAY be removing it from their inventory. Aftermarket parts are still available.

BTW, the Mopar one I got was made in Mexico!
