What service manual is that? I see no circuit numbers, no wire gauge information, and the colors for the fog lamp wires are just straight up wrong.

Now, I did find a diagram that purports to be from a 2000XJ that shows the fog lamp switch powering a relay, but if you look closely you'll see that it also indicates the only way fog lights will come on is if your high beams are also on---which is exactly the opposite of how it actually works.


So maybe Chrysler finally figured out the right way to do things in 2000. But they never fixed the headlight switch.

 

That last wiring diagram makes sense. The other two diagrams seem to be partials of a larger system. My Cherokee is a 2000 and the fog lights are controlled through a relay.

 

Should I be using both prongs of the multi meter on both prongs of the fog lights wire to test volts? I have the multi meter in the pic and turned it to the 20 on the left side of the dial. My reading kept changing and the prongs were wet so I don't know if this matters?

I'm I going about this correctly?

 

Factory wiring and relay can handle up to 55W. If you want larger than that, just change the relay for one rated for your lights. I put 100W on my brothers XJ w/a 100W relay.

 

my apollogies on my clarity, im trying to establish what i should be reading while testing the stock fog wiring i need to know if its working properly.

 

Easiest way to test is going to be hook up a light. Any 12v light.

 

i dont have a test light but i have a multi meter. I never had use of my fogs once i bought the jeep. can they be turned on without the head lights on or do the head lights need to be on to?

Secondly what am i looking for from the multi meter when checking the fog leads?

 

Got at test light. I turned the headlights on, tested the fog light plugs below the bumper. no light. opened the hood and tested all the fuses, 2 20w would not light up so i replaced them and still no light with the tester. I pulled the fog light switch from the dash and im getting 10.50V with the car off and about 11.40v with the car running. With the switch still out i went back and tested the fuses again and now they are lighting up. Does this mean the switch is bad or is the relay?

i disassembled the switch cleaned the contacts and reassembled it. nothing else new so i dont know what im looking for from this point.

 

Do I test ALL of the pins on the switch for resistance?

the PDC shows two fog relays. I only have one, is this normal and what is the function of the dlr fog relay I'm missing.

I have just mounted up a new winch bar that has spotties and indicators incorporated. I dont want to muck around getting a cable through the firewall as there is already 2 dead plugs where spot lights would usually go. My switch lights up when i turn my fog lamps on but im getting no voltage at the switches. Relay has been swapped and that made no difference. All fuses check out to be fine too. Surely there must be a loose wire between the 2 dead plugs and the switch because the switch lights up. How do we get 12v to the 2 dead plugs?
