This is kind of embarrassing for me to ask, but how do you tell which model I have? X2, FJ? Vin # is 1J4FJ38L9LL1xxxxx. I don't really know. First-time jeep owner. It's a 1990 Cherokee Pioneer 4.0 Auto 4×4. Help please

Yeah that's it. XJ. So I do have an XJ then? I was wondering which model it was. How can you tell? Never owned a Jeep before plus I'm new to this forum.

Lots of good info here. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jeep You can select each model to go to it;s page. There's also time lines on the bottom you have to click "show" on the right side to see.

You can check Vin number of your car through special online service, where you will get exhaustive information about a car. Try, if your question is still actual.

No, don't do that. The VIN decoders spit back a small amount of correct information along with a bunch of crap listing what a "typical" car of your year might have had. They're usually wrong, and they create a lot of confusion with people convinced they have equipment they don't or that a prior owner removed something that should have been there.

Instead, go to this URL:

http://www.jeep.com/webselfservice/jeep/index.html

On the left side of the page is a box that says "YOUR VEHICLE" at the top. Click "Equipment Listing" in that box and enter your VIN on the next page. The site will spit back your Jeep's actual build sheet in PDF format, which you can then save. The build sheet lists the actual equipment that was installed on your actual vehicle at the factory when it was actually built.

The search page says that "vehicles built before 1998 are not eligible for this functionality," but it's wrong. The build sheets are in there for most XJs. If you do get an error, just click the email link on that same page, send Jeep your VIN, and a human will look up your build sheet and send you a PDF of it within a couple of days (sometimes as quick as the next day).
