Default 8.25 With SYE Front Drive Shaft in Rear?

1996 4.0 NP231

Can I use a front drive shaft as a rear given the above info? Will the length need to be modded with a 3-4" lift?

Thanks

I've got a front shaft on the rear of my 90. 4 door with auto, 231 and an 8.8. Good fit.

Edit: HYRYSC, You are correct. I pulled the front shaft off of a 96 (IIRC) auto 4.0.

You will need a front driveshaft out of an auto.

Should be fine. Just find the correct length one, I believe auto trans shafts are a bit linger than manual.

I had a similar set up on my last xj and I ran an auto front shaft in the rear. It ran perfect, mine was a 96 4.0 auto with a sye on the 231 also.

Its best to install the sye and measure to figure out which shaft you need. And here is a list of front driveshafts by lengths http://www.pirate4x4.com/forum/jeep-...iveshafts.html

I'm using a stock xj front shaft on the rear with a 6inch lift and 33s with no problems

Got the SYE done. EASY job. Going to start calling junkyards for auto 4.0 front driveshafts tomorrow. Any years better than others? Any years a definite "no fit"?

Thanks

I found it easier to pull a shaft off of a part out on Craigslist. All of the front shafts were missing at the local yards. Got it cheap too.

I don't recall the years but some use Grand Cherokee driveshaft's also.

I'm using a custom built rear shaft and a front shaft for a spare the same for both, it's marginal for the rear but will work to get me home.

Local JY has one from an '89 Wagoneer says it looks rebuilt, good condition. I'm going to measure it. Otherwise he's got a '00 XJ he could pull one out of.

Scored a JY driveshaft for $65. All joints greaseable. As soon as the lift frees up I'll get the TC and DS installed.

Thanks all!
