Sup guys,

My girlfriend just got a 96 XJ in really good condition but the clear coat is coming off all over. Have seen a number of folks use bedliner for their Jeeps and I liked what I saw from Monstaliner.

I have never painted a car before. I know it is all about the prep work, but my girlfriend and I think we could handle this well if we take our time. Luckily, she has a little sedan she can drive to work in the meantime.

So this is my plan of action thus far. This is where I'd appreciate some feedback from you guys.

1. Take off grill, lights, and roof rack.
2. Sand car surface. I saw 40 grit. Go until I get all of paint off?
3. Wipe it off with surface cleaner. What's best?
4. Tape off everything.
5. Coat of primer. Again, what'd be best?
6. 2 coats Monstaliner.

Thoughts? Leaving out anything?

 

If the base coat is in good shape, why not just sand and re-clear?

Go for it! I'm wanting to monstaline mine, but can't decide on a color. Was originally planning on doing predator green. Just not sure if I really want to go that loud. I want to keep it green but don't really like any of their other greens. Im planning to just scuff my paint good, throw on a couple coats of epoxy primer, then spray the liner. probably going to roll my door jambs and such. The website has a few good tips. I think spraying it gives a more textured finish than rolling. Be sure to keep us posted on how it goes.

 

In that case!
1. Take off as much as you feel inclined to, the more you take off, the better the result can be.

2. I would just sand to primer or sand all the clear off, factory primer/paint is a lot tougher than most primer's you'd be able to apply, and Monstaliner is meant to be applied to already painted truck beds. 40 grit is too rough for just scuffing the surface finish.

3. You can buy monstaliner's surface prep probably, I would use alcohol or another cleaner that doesn't leave any residue.

5. See above.

6. Yes, two coats, follow the directions. Are you going to roll or spray the Monstaliner?

 

I intend to roll it on. What grit sandpaper would get the clear off?

 

I'd go with either 120 or 80

 

Did mine last spring for same kind of issues! Didn't matter what grit sandpaper I used, just roughed it up so it didn't feel smooth to the touch anymore. Did the bottom half ,and used plastidip on the top. Did straight black, and love it! Did my bumper in it too, had some left over. The gallon kit did my whole bottom half with a solid two coats. Great product, would do again. (don't have any current pictures of jeep, must fix that...)

 

Sand just enough to rough it up clean it off with wax and grease remover then roll it on.And always follow the directions on the can.

 

 

Go for the monstaliner, I just did and it is very nice.

I was just planning on monstalining my jeep too! when you do yours make sure you keep us posted so i can check it out

 

Question for the guys that have applied this product or other liner coarings that have been in place for say 3+ years, how has it held up, any fading, cracking, pros/cons, would you do it again? please share recent pics.
