Wow that simple?! I would just leave it unplugged and never look back. Sure, you don't need the brake pedal to shift which could be a safety hazard but just be aware of that and you're good to go!

That was it guys! I can officially shift out of park now. You are the man Cruiser
. Do you think it was a coincidence that my brake bulbs blew out at the same time? I'm starting to think it's this relay that is wired into both the brake light switch and the interlock.

Was having trouble shifting into park and not able to shift down into 3 from drive without mashing the brake pedal down.
Did exactly as shown in the video and everything is smooth as butter now.

After doing as the video shows everything was working great except NO brake lights.
Removed everything shown and plugged the brake pedal switch as it was off the assembly line. No need to mash the brakes to shift.
Shifts perfect and brake lights work now. Noticed soon after while testing the boat trailer lights the brake lights were out.
Hope the pic uploads ok.

Cruiser54, sorry to revive this thread but I am having this same issue on my 96 XJ. I unplugged the interlock cable, but I really want to fix it versus just leaving it unplugged. Do you have any pics of how you replaced the interlock cable? I can't find any videos on how to replace it.

Sorry, I don't.
Same problem, just fixed. The relay connected to the break peddle has a tiny toggle that is compressed and released when stepping on the breaks.
my toggle to the relay was stuck. Just throwing ideas out there!
